In a word… YES!
Think about the value of a personal recommendation. You are going to be more influenced by one of your friends recommending this type of light bulb versus an advertisement. Web 2.0 is about social interaction and the new ways in which you can communicate with your peers online. These new methods (like micro-blogging – Twitter) allow you to communicate in a new way.
Using social strategy for business is now a measurable metric! You can see where people are coming from and how your Facebook page is helping your business. A staggering 43% of web users participate in some social network, and most of them log in more than once a day.
A real world example on how Social Media provides a new channel of opportunity for marketing and conversions:
Dell computer ran a social campaign on Twitter in 2009 which successfully brought in more than $1.3 million in revenue.
Followers of @dellcomputers were offered a daily deal, along with other special information and discounts not available through other media. While normally a one to one medium, certain aspects of social sites allow targeting of both one–to-one and one-to-many opportunities.
Eighty percent (80%) of product research starts on the web. Many of those initial queries begin with questions to friends on Facebook, or comments on a micro-blogging service like Twitter. You must be actively participating and using competitive research tools/services to learn about and answer people’s questions.
If you have established yourself as a credible expert, then your social influence can be put to great use on the web.
Another real world example: “Will It Blend? videos have attracted more than 94 million YouTube views in addition to over 100 million views on the willitblend.com.
They have also delivered more than 217,000 YouTube channel subscribers, 17,000+ YouTube friends, and a dizzying number of video responses. Most importantly, they delivered a 700 percent increase in sales.”
Another social media outlet is video. Internet video is the future… an extremely valuable resource for getting your message out in a cost effective manner.
YouTube is now the second largest search engine in the world, and more than 13 hours of video are uploaded every minute.
There is revenue hiding between the “You” and the “Tube!” You don’t have to have the expensive equipment or the professional actors to be effective. All you need is a plan and a simple video camera.
